Reading FC’s 2012-13 shirts

So the now annual anti-climax that is the unveiling of the new shirt for the forthcoming season has been completed and as per usual it’s had as many critics as fans as we all unleash our inner Gok Wan. Love it or hate it Reading will be playing in a brand new shirt next year and you’ll be seeing a lot of it as we’re plastered all over the TV.

The Source of Frustration that is Simon Church

June 4, 2012 1 comment

2011/12 will go down in the annals of Reading Football Club history as one their greatest successes. Promotion to the top flight for only the second time in 141 years was achieved by a team that was more than the sum of its parts. A hodge podge of young players and veterans who’d not quite cut it in the top flight. What saw them through was an incredible self-belief that enabled previously average players to suddenly find a new gear that took them to a higher playing level than any fan dared dream in the summer. In amongst it all though is the incredibly frustrating figure of Simon Church. The Wales international started the season as Shane Long’s replacement yet by the end of it, despite some goals in big games, he’s ended it as fourth choice with a disappointing return of 7 goals in 32 games. How is it that when everyone else seems to have produced their best season for the club to date, Church has stagnated and fallen by the wayside? Is it a lack of games, faith from the manager, confidence or is he simply not very good?

The Big Bad Wolf

Thursday 26th January. Not a day that immediately sticks in the mind but it could just be the day that Reading secured their place in the Premier League. St Patrick’s Day XI

17th March is a day that many use as an excuse to put on a green wig, get bladdered on Guinness and enjoy the craic. I say, rather than pretending we’re Tony Cascarino and that we’ve got an Irish grandmother, lets instead salute some of the best players that the Emerald Isle has given us (and Alan Maybury).

As usual this is my team so whilst there are probably some glaring omissions you can hold me to account in the comments section. Also, I’ve decided to adopt rugby union’s approach and I will be selecting players from both the Republic and Northern Ireland. No doubt this will offend some but probably fewer than had I been forced to include Joe Gamble and Patrick O’Kelly.

The Reading FC – Went on to Better Things XI

September 8, 2011 Leave a comment

With Matt Mills and Shane Long both securing big money moves over the summer I thought it would be as good an opportunity as any to take a look back and see which players have left the club and gone on to better things. Given the up and down nature of the club over the last couple of decades it’s probably necessary to define what I mean by ‘better things’. So what I mean is players who have improved their career and/or played at a higher level than they were doing so at Reading. For that reason I’ve ruled out pretty much the entire Premiership side. The likes of Sonko, Shorey, Sidwell, Doyle, Kitson and Hahnemann all effectively stayed at the same level when they left the club and as yet, none of them have really moved up from where we were.
