Birmingham 2-0 Reading FC – Brum Fail To Deflate Royals Fans As They Wave Goodbye To The Championship

April 29, 2012 Leave a comment

After two weeks of celebrating promotion it didn’t come as the greatest of surprises that a much changed Reading side came undone at the hands of Birmingham, who clinched fourth place in the Championship with a 2-0 win at St Andrew’s.

Despite the defeat and a miserable day weather wise, it was still another awesome day to be a Reading fan, with the traditional end of season inflatables and over 4,000 Royals fans helping create a great atmosphere, one worthy of Champions.

What a difference two hours makes. After ten-man Reading battled to a draw against Crystal Palace at the Madejski Stadium on Saturday afternoon, most supporters expected the title showdown with Southampton to come down to the last day of the season. But at 7.15pm, the relief and delight was felt all across town as Middlesbrough beat the Saints, ensuring Reading’s second promotion to the top flight would also see them crowned champions for the second time. Reading made one change to the team which sealed Premier League football on Tuesday night – Hal Robson-Kanu came in on the right wing for Jimmy Kebe, who had been carrying a knee injury for a few games.

Reading FC 1-0 Nottingham Forest – Over The Line, Party Time

April 18, 2012 3 comments

Well, don’t know about the rest of you but I’m still on Cloud 10 yet alone Cloud 9.

Due to West Ham’s slip up at Bristol City, Reading secured promotion back to the Premier League last night with a hard fought 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest with Mikele Leigertwood scoring the vital goal nine minutes from time. It marked a remarkable turnaround for a team that was a 14-1 shot to go up in December and had title odds of 150-1 and now Brian McDermott and his players can look forward to pitting themselves against Wayne Rooney, Sergio Aguero, Frank Lampard, Robin van Persie and Fernando Torres.

I’m probably not the only Reading fan who’s woken up in a bit of a daze today. Last night’s 3-1 win over Southampton edged us ever closer to a place back in the Premier League as 3,000 Royals in the away end yesterday were lucky enough to witness an amazing win.

The scoreline might seem slightly harsh if you’re a Southampton fan, but this is what Reading have been doing to teams up and down the country the whole season and it’s the reason that today, WE ARE TOP OF THE LEAGUE.

West Ham 2-4 Reading FC – Amazing

April 1, 2012 4 comments

Amazing – No other word really does it justice as far as Reading fans are concerned because yesterday has to be up there with any of the best days we’ve had following this football club. To go to West Ham and put four past a team who have been in the top 3 all season and who have had just 1 defeat in 2012 was stunning to say the least and it will have left a lasting impression on each of the 3,000 strong Reading contingent in the Sir Trevor Brooking Lower.

It’s fair to say that this game had seemed a very long time coming. From the moment Reading stormed into the automatic promotion picture, the match had loomed on the horizon bringing with it a mix of fear, excitement and anticipation not felt since that fateful day last May. Like that day in May there was a 4-2 scoreline but this time it was Reading fans leaving London with smiles on their faces, so join me if you will for a lovely trip back in time to Saturday March 31st  where Reading put at least their little toe into the Premier League.

As Reading enter the home straight, every game becomes even more vital than before. With Southampton a couple of lengths out in front, and West Ham and Reading comprising the chasing pack with the other contenders left way behind, every slip-up from here on in could make the difference between automatic promotion and the play-off “lottery”. Reading’s first blip came away at Peterborough on Tuesday night – the third away game in eight days for Brian McDermott’s men seeing them lose for the first time in eleven games to set Royals’ fans nerves tingling. They were aiming to resume normal service at the Mad Stad against Blackpool. Jason Roberts picked up a hamstring injury against the Posh and was replaced by new Arsenal loanee Benik Afobe up top. Shaun Cummings replaced another loanee, Hayden Mullins, in the only other change for Reading.
