Leicester 0-2 Reading FC – The Royals & Hunt down Mills

August 14, 2011

Well that shows how much we know doesn’t it? I at least got the number of goals right for Reading… but what a result and I’m delighted to be proved wrong!

Having not been able to be at or even listen to the game, another Loyal Royal, Steve Guscott, volunteered to share his thoughts on the game and you can read his report below the jump.

So who are we playing?: Leicester City at the Walkers… I mean King Power Stadium

Where did Leicester finish in the Championship last year? 10th

How are they shaping up after the summer?  Leicester have spent this summer reshaping their squad with a number of high profile and high cost acquisitions that have made them one of the favourites for the division. Neil Danns, Paul Konchesky, Kasper Schmeichal and of course our former Captain Matt Mills have been signed by Sven and they won their opening league and cup game to start this season.

Last time we played them? Jimmy Kebe was on top form as Reading won 3-1 at the Madejski Stadium last spring

Any former Royals? The man who led the Royals out at Wembley in May shocked many when he moved across the division in a deal worth up to £5.5 million pounds. Matt Mills will certainly get an interesting reception from Royals fans.

Where Do We Point A Finger? – A Take On The Matt Mills Transfer

When the final whistle blew at Wembley some six weeks ago, I fully expected one player to leave the club for around 5 million pounds, but if you’d have told me that it would be Matt Mills, I’d have asked where you were drinking pre-match and how cheap was the beer…..

I’d have suggested you were drinking/taking even stronger stuff if you’d told me the same thing 15 months ago when a certain central defender caused uproar amongst a group of fans for giving them the middle finger and followed it up weeks later with a needless red card at Ipswich to all but end our play-off hopes.

However, yesterday Matt Mills’ transfer to Championship rivals Leicester City was confirmed, with a fee reported to be £4.5 million rising to £5.5m.  The initial reaction from Reading fans has been mixed, with some players angry and the player, others frustrated at the club’s management and others praising Nick Hammond for getting maximum value for the player.

Below I’ll be giving my take on the whole saga and trying to figure out what might be next.

Where are Leicester in the Championship? 9th

Recent Form?  Very up and down. Leicester have spent most of 2011 inside the top half and flirting with the playoff places without ever actually getting into them. Their last five games include two wins, two draws and one defeat, including a 3-3 draw away at Middlesbrough and a 3-0 win over Scunthorpe.

Last time we played them? Gylfi Sigurdsson’s scored his last goal in a Reading shirt, before Matt Mills headed in late on to give us our first win of the season, in a 2-1 win at the Walkers.

Any former Royals? Nope, Leicester are a Royal free zone, though they did nick Mark McGhee off us in 1994, with winger Scott Taylor signing shortly after.
